Beginning Latin Students in Shipley’s 6th Grade Enjoyed a Traditional Roman Feast
Shipley 6th graders have been hard at work studying their Latin under the guidance of Magistra Anne Smith and Magistra Lynn Ennis Iozzo. They have learned vocabulary and several grammatical terms, such as “nominative,” “accusative,” and “declension.” They have learned about the Roman house, the discovery and layout of ancient Pompeii, and Roman culinary customs.
To celebrate, they organized a Lucullan Roman Banquet where there was decadent feasting alla romana and entertainmen, dancers, wrestlers, and musicians. Traditional ancient dishes were prepared and brought in by the students, including baked boar (roast pork), sea bass with capers, ham, foccacia, and an array of fruits and nuts complete with pomegranates, figs, grapes, and melon. Students were dressed in traditional kitons and togas, and royalty were attended to by their slaves.
