Note: Individual teachers may have specific directions for their classes.
1. Materials: Bring to class daily (failure to do so could result in a disciplinary report).
• Texts currently in use.
• Blue or black pens, pencils, lined white paper without shredded edges.
• Some form of a notebook or three-ring binder.
• Assignment sheet (what is said in class takes precedence over online assignments)
2. Classroom Conduct
• Attendance to class is expected. If students are absent, they should get class notes from a classmate, keep up with all assignments, and take tests or quizzes and hand in papers on the day they return. Remember: too many absences may result in the loss of credit for the course.
• Promptness. Arrive in class before the bell rings. Habitual lateness to class may result in a disciplinary report or a reduction of your grade.
• Courtesy. Please show respect to your teacher and classmates. This means no sleeping in class, slouching, eating or drinking, or attending to personal hygiene.
• Care of Classroom. Classrooms and their contents belong to teachers. Please do not help yourself to anything on the shelves, desk, closets, or walls without asking. Please leave the space as clean as you found it. Respect the confidentiality of all papers, grade books, and computer screens.
3. Homework, Tests, Quizzes
• Please write your first and last names on all submitted work. In addition, write the date and your section number.
• Copying homework from another student is a violation of the Honor Code. In addition, you will not receive the benefit of practice by copying, so this practice is not a particularly wise one anyway.
• Academic Honesty. Always do your own work. Do not share homework unless specifically directed. Cite outside sources (tutors, friends, other teachers, the Internet, print sources and parents) appropriately. Do not share information about quizzes, tests, etc. with peers.
4. Essays
• Typed, double-spaced, page numbered, 12-point font, word count required, name on each page and stapled before you come to class. No plastic covers or title pages. Always make a copy and save. These specifications pertain to rough drafts as well as final drafts.
• No funky fonts. Use Arial or Times New Roman and standard 1-inch margins.
• Correct spelling and punctuation are expected as a minimum requirement and are counted as part of your grade. Please use computer programs, a proofing partner, or ask the teacher for help well before the essay due date.
• Late work is penalized ten percentage points per day unless you obtain an extension well in advance of the due date. Work must be ready when you arrive at class. A five point penalty will be assessed if work is handed in later the same day. If an assignment is late, the student will lose ten points a day. The student must still complete the assignment in order to complete the course and earn credit.
• Electronic submission of papers: Should a student be absent on a paper's due date, he/she may submit the paper by class time via email (no faxed papers). A hard copy of the paper must be submitted on the day the student returns to class. In no other case is electronic submission acceptable.
• Extensions will be granted in certain unusual circumstances; however, this privilege should not be abused or overused, and will in any case only be granted at least 48 hours prior to the paper's due date.
• Writing portfolio: All essays must be kept in the classroom file folder after they are graded. All papers are then stored in their folders and must remain in the classroom until the end of the year.
