Linking to Your Files (PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Inserting Links to Images and Files
(Including PDFs, Word, Excel and PowerPoint files)

Important note about linking to any file type: File names can only include letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores.  File names cannot include spaces or any special characters.

Important note about linking to PowerPoint files.  It is recommened to save PowerPoint files as PowerPoint Shows, .pps.  This ensure that the files can be viewed by anyone.

Links to images or PDF files are easy to insert using the RedDot text editor. 

  1. Select the text you want to be a link i.e. “Click here to go to view Handout 1”
  2. Click the Insert Link button 
  3. In the Insert/Edit Link Window click the “Insert Reference To Media Element” button. 
     
  4. Keep the default selected, “Select File from Local File System” and click OK. 
  5. “Browse …” to find the file
     
  6. Once you have found the file select it and click “Open”
  7. The file path and name will appear in the Select File window.  Click OK
     
  8. VERY IMPORTANT!  You must choose a folder for the image or PDF file to be stored in. choose your own file.  If you do not see a folder with your name please Cancel and request a folder from the Webmaster.
     
  9. You will see the file path and name in the href filed of the Insert/Edit Link window.
    Please be sure to set the target to “_blank” to ensure the image/PDF opens in a new window.
     
  10. Click OK
  11. You will now see that the text you selected is a link.  As long as you have set the target to “_blank” you will be able to test the link while inside RedDot.
