 WebPage Do’s and Don’ts

  • Don’t use underlining in text – underlining is reserved for links.
    • Underlining text that is not a link only frustrates your visitors because they think the link is broken.
  • Only use Arial size 2 for text and size 3 for headings.
    • Using anything large may cause page viewers to either not see all your text or make the scroll to the right (very annoying)
  • Don’t use too many photos.
    • A page with a lot of graphics takes a long time to load and your visitors may not wait around for it to happen – no matter how cool your class pictures are.
  • Use a hard return for a paragraph break and a “Shift  + Return” for a line break
    • This is the same principal that MS Word uses but not widely used
  • Paste a true table from MS Word or Excel, not a table created using tabs
    • HTML does not have code for a tab and while RedDot has tried to help with their Increase/Decrease indent button it is not cure for the ailing table.  If you need help creating tables please ask.
  • Remember – colors that look good on your monitor may look completely different on another monitor so stick to using the Shipley colors, black, red and white (directions for using colored text below).
  • Left alignment is best.
    • Text that is centered is more difficult to read because you eyes have to do more work to follow it.
  • Refrain from using all caps, no matter how much you want to stress your point.
    • Instead color text or use a background color and make the text white.
  • Check your links to make sure they work and that the content of the page your linking to has not changed.
  • Never upload images with spaces in their file name (inserting image directions are below).
  • If you use an image that you did not create give credit where credit is due.
