Summer Institutes at Teachers College, Columbia University
Every summer more than three thousand teachers attend the summer institutes at Columbia’s Teachers College, each of which is five to six days in length. The Institutes include keynote addresses, small writing or reading workshops, and small group sections designed to help teachers strengthen their methods of teaching reading and writing. Teachers are supported in making fundamental changes in their teaching practices and building new images of what is possible in their classrooms.

"I attended the Writing and Reading Institutes in consecutive summers.  Each was a transforming experience, helping me to understand the importance of cultivating the seeds of lifelong reading and writing."  (Elizabeth Dougherty)

"I liked the format of this conference. Each morning began with a speaker, and then we had workshops and a final speaker in the afternoon. All of the speakers were very dynamic and gave very real examples that were applicable to my own teaching. It was a very practical conference. All the participants were very focused on learning to teach children to become better writers." (Christian Wareikis)
