Sophomores Organize Book Drive for Temple's Children's Medical Center
Sophomores Maddie Grant and Perrie Hartz organized a Book Drive which resulted in over 1300 books brought in by Shipley’s Middle and Upper School students. The books were donated to Temple University Children’s Medical Center. Temple’s Joelle Garnick, Child Life & Recreation Therapy Clinical Manager explained to the Upper School students in a special assembly that books drives are essential to providing reading materials to North Philadelphia children who might not otherwise have a book of their own. Many of the children of North Philly do not read, and are part of one of the most poverty stricken areas of the state. While students at Shipley are surrounded by books, those children might not ever have a book of their own. The outpatient clinic at the hospital lets each child who visits the clinic pick one out to take home and keep.

Temple is also responsible for distributing the books that are not used in the clinic to other parts of the city including to the Free Library of Philadelphia. The goal of the book drive program is to try to make a change in a small child’s life and Maddie and Perrie have helped to accomplish that.
