Fourth grade students at The Shipley School worked hard this past month to provide a happy holiday for needy families in Philadelphia. Through the coordination of Episcopal Community Service, one of the largest social service agencies in the city, students were paired with thirteen families in a service effort that reinforces one aspect of the school’s mission which is “dedicated to developing in each student a compassionate participation in the world.”
They do this by earning money doing odd jobs and chores at home and in their neighborhoods, and through bake sales. As a result of this year’s efforts, the children were able to raise more than $2,800, which was used to purchase gifts for 61 adults and children.

With money in hand, the children, in groups of two, spent a frenetic hour and half at the Plymouth Meeting Target store on Dec. 8th, selecting appropriate gifts for each family member. Once the gifts and an additional gift card for each family were organized they were picked up for distribution to the families.
This tradition of the fourth grade adopting families has gone on for over a decade and shows the commitment their teachers, Linda Van Horn, Ingrid Serrell, and Carol Henn have to helping their students live the school’s mission. As Carol Henn put it, “Our students felt so proud that they were able to provide gifts to some families that needed a helping hand this holiday season.“
