Risa Benson’s Fabric Works on Exhibit Through February 6th
Risa Benson’s innovative fabric scarfs, dresses, crocheted bags, and stunning jewelry are currently on exhibit in the Speer Gallery of The Shipley Upper School through February 6.

Benson, a Philadelphia resident, studied painting at RISD, and later, craft studies at Tyler School of Art, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and University of the Arts. Her knitting and loom work is self taught. Her work has been on exhibition nationally and she has received excellence awards from both the Washington Craft Show 2001, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show 2002.

Benson describes the creative process which has brought her work to this level, “I was drawn to the challenge of creating innovative garments that are constructed from the simplest techniques, employing increase and decrease options, bind-offs, dropstitch, and abrupt tension changes to achieve effective surface and textural interest, as well as new garment shapes. With these changes, I realized I needed more control over the 'color atmosphere’ of my work.…The above developments evolved into combining hand-dyed, stamped, and pieced silk with dyed and discharged knitted strips, quilted and sewn into scarf shapes.”
