Local Baker Shares His Craft with Third Graders
When Elliette Wells, Shipley 3rd grader, wrote that when she grows up she wants to be a baker, the class decided to bring in a baker to do a class demonstration. Art Leschinsky, baker and chef for Whole Foods in Wynnewood, was more than happy to oblige. With food processor and supplies in hand, Leschinsky made dough of flour, yeast, sugar, and water. He demonstrated how to knead the dough and the various ways to make rolls or loaves. The budding bakers braided, kneaded, patted, and decorated with cinnamon sugar, raisins, or sesame seeds, to finish their creations and make them truly tasty and unique. Once the baked goods had a chance to rise, they were transferred to a hot oven for baking and finally enjoying.

The third grade regularly features a student as part of its "spotlight” program. This encourages the students to learn about each other and their interests. They are compiling a book in which each student contributes something about him or herself, including plans and ambitions for when he or she grows up.
