Fall Sports

Boys’ Varsity Soccer

Program History 

  • 13 league championships in the past 16 years.
  • 11 players recognized as All-State.
  • Currently, Shipley alumni play NCAA Division I soccer at Lafayette College and Fairfield University and Division III at Tufts, Moravian College, Muhlenberg, Trinity, and Williams College.
  • Shipley boys’ soccer coaches have been recognized as Coach of the Year in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Main Line Times, Main Line Life, and Suburban and Wayne Times.
  • In 2006, Shipley was ranked 14th in the SEPSA.

Recent Season Highlights

  • A powerhouse in the Friends Schools League since they joined in 2005.
  • Earned Championship titles in 2005, 2006, 2008 & 2009, finishing 2nd in 2007, losing 3-2 in the final.
  • The 2009 Gators were 15-2-1 overall and unbeaten in League play.

Program History

  • Shipley has competed in four league championship games in five years, capturing titles in 2006 and 2007.
  • Many players named to All League and All Area teams, including 2 players recognized as All-Southeast Pennsylvania athletes.
  • Past players have joined the ranks of a number of Division I programs including Providence College, Penn State, Bucknell University, and St. Bonnie’s. Other players have gone on to compete at a wide range of Division III schools, including Bowdoin College and Muhlenberg College.

  • 13-1-2 Overall Record, 9-1 FSL Record
  • Undefeated regular season
  • After tying their first two regular season games the Gators went on a 13 game winning streak only to come up short in the Championship game.

Program History

  • Previously a member of the Inter-Ac League, where they were competitive each year and won the championship in 1995.
  • Coach Whelan started coaching in 1998, as the assistant to Michelle Then. In her coaching career at Shipley, girls have gone on to play at colleges such as Wake Forest, Trinity, Amherst, Delaware, and Union.
  • In 2005, Coach Whelan was named Coach of the Year by the Main Line Times and Main Line Life.
  • Shipley won championships in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009 and finished second in 2007.
  • The team's overall record in the league during the past 4 years is 38-4-3.

2009 Season Highlights

  • Friends League Champions; 15-0 Overall Record, 9-0 FSL Record
  • Big Inter-Ac wins over Agnes Irwin, Baldwin and Springside
  • This squad scored 62 goals during the ’09 season and only allowed 10 against.
  • Friends League Honors – 1st team: Jill Keeney, Sam Wolfson, Brooke Truskey and Avery. Honorable Mention: Joanie Thompson and Ellie Andersen.

Program History
The Shipley School girls' varsity tennis team has a long tradition of fielding strong teams. Many girls on the team also play out of school in local and national junior tournaments on a regular basis. 

2009 Season Highlights

  • 9-2 Overall Record, 5-1 FSL Record.
  • The team competed in the finals of the Friends' League team tournament, beating league rival Friends' Central in a closely fought match.
  • Shipley's 2nd doubles team won the finals of the individual tournament and the 3rd singles play also won their division.
  • Many of our players have received All-Main Line Honors and All Friends Schools League Honors.

Program History

  • Shipley’s Cross Country program is committed to the growth of each of our athletes—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
  • The program stresses both athletic excellence and fostering a lifetime enjoyment of the sport of running.
  • Fully coed.
  • A positive attitude and good sportsmanship are distinguishing characteristics of the Shipley runner.
  • Numerous Shipley runners have received All-Main Line honors, and many have continued on to Division III collegiate competition.

2009 Season Highlights

  • Boys: 4-5 Overall Record, 3-4 FSL Record.
  • Girls: 1-6 Overall Record, 1-4 FSL Record.
  • The boys' team finished 4th in the Friends’ Schools League.
  • During the 2009, season Shipley runners were consistently found in the top tier of Friends Schools League competitions.

Program History

  • Over the years, The Shipley School crew team has competed at the highest levels of our sport, including Scholastic Nationals, The Stotesbury Cup Regatta, and the Henley Royal Regatta in England.
  • Past rowers have gone on to compete at the collegiate level at schools such as Harvard, Dartmouth, Princeton, Bucknell, Trinity, and Williams, to name just a few.

2009-2010 Season Highlights

  • The crew team medaled at several regattas, with first-place finishes at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta (Varsity Double), and New Jersey Rowing Championships (Varsity Double, Lightweight Double, Varsity Quad, Novice Quad, JV Double). 
  • The boys’ varsity double and lightweight double qualified for and competed in Nationals and came in at 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Winter Sports

Girls’ Varsity Volleyball

Program History

  • Independent Schools Volleyball League Champions in 2009
  • Inter-Ac League champions four consecutive times from 1992-1995.
  • The program had one player go on to play NCAA Division 1 volleyball at Lehigh University.
  • Recent players have been recognized by the Main Line Times, as well as Main Line Life.
  • In 2008-2009, the team finished in 1st place with an impressive 15-1 league record.  This was the best record for Shipley in years.

2009-2010 Season Highlights

  • The program has been rebuilding to be one of the top competitors in the Independent Volleyball League.
  • In 2009-2010, the team made it to the league semi-finals with a record of 11-4.   
  • Four players were All-League team selections.

Girls' Varsity Basketball

Program History

  • Since 3rd year Head Coach Sean Costello has been with the program, 6 years total, the Gators record has been 94-40.
  • In the 2005-06 season the Gators finished 11-10, with a semi-final loss in the Friends Schools League Playoffs.
  • The Gators finished the 2006-07 season with an impressive 22-6 record with a loss in the Friends League Final. 
  • Friends School League Champions in 2007-08, 19-4 overall record.
  • Back to back Friends Schools League Champions in 2008-09 with a 19-3 overall record.  Alex Lennon finished her career with 1,013 points and is currently playing at West Chester University.
  • In 2009-2010 Shipley finished the season 11-8, with a loss in the Friends League Final.

  • In 2009-2010 Shipley finished the season with an overall record of 11-8, and 8-2 in the Friends League with a loss in the League Final.
  • Co-captains for next year, Celeste Golub and Jordyn Turner each recieved All-Main Line and Friends League honors.

Program History

  • Won Keystone Scholastic Athletic Conference three seasons in a row before joining the Friends Schools League in 2005.
  • During 2002-2003 season, team was ranked top 20 in Philadelphia area.
  • In 2007-2008 season, team lost to the #23 team in the nation during Friends Schools League semi-finals.

2009-2010 Season Highlights 

  • 16-11 Overall Record, 4-5 FSL Record
  • With only one senior, team played its most competitive schedule in years. 
  • Ranked as high as #6 in Philadelphia Daily News Suburban Top Ten
  • Won the Radnor High School Walter E. Katuzny Memorial Christmas Tournament.
  • Defeated John Bartram High School in the 3rd Annual Shipley New Year Tip Off Classic at Villanova University.
  • Defeated Susquehanna Township High School in the Kobe Bryant Classic at Widener University.
  • Made to the finals of the PAISAA State Championship B-Bracket.

Program History

  • The team competes in the Mid-Atlantic Squash Association (MASA), which is divided into the Independent Division (Hill School, Germantown Friends School, Malvern Prep, Lower Merion/Harriton High, Conestoga High, The Shipley School), and the Keystone Division (Haverford School, Penn Charter School, Chestnut Hill Academy, Lawrenceville Academy).
  • The Shipley School boys’ varsity team has won 4 Independent league titles and the MASA Championships of Baltimore 3 times in the past 10 years.
  • Currently Shipley alumni are playing college squash at Dartmouth, and Bates.

2009-2010 Season Highlights
The season was highlighted by our strong showing at The High School Nationals Team Championships, at Yale.  This was the team's second time competing in this event and the Gators finished a very respectable 24th place overall.  The team's record was 11-4 overall and 8-3 in the Independent Squash League, finishing second overall.  Also, Shipley was awarded the MASA Sportsmanship award for this season and senior Charlie Swanson received an individual sportsmanship award.

Girls’ Varsity Squash

Program History

  • The Shipley School girls' varsity squash program has a long tradition of fielding strong teams.
  • Many girls on the team also play out of school in local and national junior tournaments on a regular basis.
  • The team competes in The Independent Squash League and plays in the Mid Atlantic Squash Association Tournament at the end of each season.
  • Shipley competes against schools such as Agnes Irwin, Episcopal, Springside, Penn Charter, Baldwin, and Lawrenceville.
  • Players have gone on to play at Dartmouth, Harvard, Bates, and Bowdoin
  • Currently, Clare Kuensell '08, plays for the strong Princeton team.

  • The team finished with a record of 4-7
  • The girls competed in the High School National Championships at Yale University in January, 2010.  This was the team's first time competing in the event, and the Gators won all 4 of their matches to take home the Division III Championship.

Program Overview

  • Shipley's swimming program accommodates a wide variety of athletes, from swimmers who are new to competition to league champions who move on to a college swimming career.
  • Coaching focuses on giving the student athletes an opportunity to compete in different strokes at different distances.  As athletes mature they begin to find the events for which they are best suited.  Gaining maximum efficiency through increased knowledge of stroke mechanics is always one of the goals at practice
  • While Bryn Mawr College's pool was closed for renovations this season, the boys' and girls' teams trained together at Baldwin's Gray Pool as well as Cabrini College and St. Joe's University. 
  • Competitions are typically in a double-dual meet format in which both teams compete at the same site but the boys' and girls' events alternate. This greatly increases the volume of cheering and support for everyone in the program.
  • Past swimmers have continued on to swim at NCAA colleges such as Lehigh University and Union College.

  • Kelly Sullivan, Mattock Callahan, and Brooke Bruno qualified and swam at Eastern Championships at LaSalle College.

Program History

  • Prior to joining the Friends Schools League in 2006, the girls’ varsity lacrosse team played in the Inter-Ac league, where they consistently won about 50% of their games.
  • 2nd in the FSL in 2006, league champions in 2007.
  • Shipley lacrosse players have gone on to play at colleges such as University of Virginia, Trinity College, Lafayette College, Middlebury College, Amherst College, Bowdoin College, Colgate College, and Muhlenberg College.

2010 Season Highlights

  • Friends Schools League Semi-finalist
  • 7-10 Overall Record, 5-3 FSL Record
  • Four players nominated First Team All-League, one given Honorable Mention All-League.
  • Two players selected to All-Main Line 2nd team, and three honorable mention selections.
  • Two players were named Academic All-Americans
  • Senior Tara Stokes broke 200 career goals

Program History

  • 2009 Undefeated FSL Champions, 17-3 record overall, 7-0 FSL
  • 4 league championships in the last six years.
  • Team advanced to the EPSLA playoffs 3 out of the last 4 years and 5 times in the School's history.
  • Shipley boys’ lacrosse players have been awarded All-State honors and named Academic All-Americans by US Lacrosse.
  • Currently there are former Shipley lacrosse players playing NCAA Division I and III lacrosse at Wagner College, Bates College, Moravian College, Washington & Lee University, Lycoming College. Former players have played NCAA lacrosse at schools including Franklin and Marshall College, Providence College, Trinity College, Connecticut College, Gettysburg, and Widener University.
  • Shipley's boys’ lacrosse coach has been recognized as Coach of the Year by the Main Line Times and Main Line Life newspapers, as well as by the Northeast Lacrosse League.
  • 15-3 record (NE League Champions) in 2005 and a 16-4 record (FSL Champions) in 2005.  In 2007 the boys advanced to the FSL Semi-Final game.

2010 Season Highlights

  • Friends Schools League Champions, best record in school history at 16-2
  • Undefeated in Friends League play for the second straight year
  • Finished the season ranked in the top 10 of PA Independent Schools for the second consecutive year
  • Record breaking season for the team as a whole, most goals in a season with 206 and fewest goals allowed in a season at 59
  • Senior Nick Sterge led the team in assists with 41, and set a school record with 8 in one game
  • Junior Julius Mouser broke 100 career goals - 48 goals, and 27 assists for 75 points this season, and was selected to the All-Main Line 1st Team
  • Sophomore Mike LItner had 44 goals, and 24 assists for 68 points and was MLT Athlete of the Week
  • Traveled to Hilton Head, SC for spring training and beat SC powers Hilton Head HS and Bluffton HS
  • Home for the Gators is the “Farm Fields” on Waverly Road in Gladwyne, consisting of two "Field Turf" Fields and one grass field

Program History

  • Friends Schools League champions in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
  • Prior to 2005, Shipley competed in the Inter-Ac League and won the title 7 out of 11 times.
  • Shipley has had many athletes continue to play softball at Division I and III colleges including The University of Pennsylvania, University of Massachusetts, Yale, Union College, Villanova and Skidmore.

Program History
The Shipley School boys’ varsity baseball team has completely rewritten the School’s record book over the past few years, and that success has taken center stage.

  • The 2006 team broke the School record for wins while compiling a 13-5 record
  • The 2007 and 2008 squads matched each other with a record-breaking win total of 14
  • Friends League Finalist 3 out of the last 5 years
  • Numerous players have been named to All-Conference Teams by the Keystone Conference, Friends Schools League, and Main Line Times. 
  • The team has competed in the league championship game in three out of the last five years.  They have also reached league playoffs five out of the last six years  
  • Annual spring break trip to Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, FL, or The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, SC
  • Shipley baseball players have continued their baseball careers at schools including Albany University, Moravian, Muhlenberg, Alvernia, Washington University of St Louis, Drew University, University of Pittsburgh Club Team, and Virginia Tech University Club Team

2010 Season Highlights

  • Friends League Finalist with a 6-0 loss to Germantown Friends in the Championship
  • Most wins in school history with a record of 17-11 overall and 9-3 in Friends League Play
  • John McCann broke the record for stolen bases in a season with 46, and was named the 10th best 2nd baseman in the area by the Philadelphia Inquirrer
  • Will Culp was named a "Player to Watch" by the Philadelphia Inquirrer
  • Five players were Friends League Selections and five reveived All-Main Line Honors

 Program History

  • Team competes at White Manor Country Club in Malvern.
  • Became a coed sport during the 2007-2008 season.
  • FSL Champions in 2006 with a record of 10-4-1 Overall, 8-2 FSL.
  • At 2007 FSL Championship, team tied Abington Friends School with a score of 176
  • At 2009 FSL Championship, Shipley won the FSL Championship Tournament convincingly as senior co-captain Max Kiely finished first with a round of 70 on the Bala Golf Club course.
  • In 2009, played the first all girls golf matches in Shipley School sports history against Agnes Irwin School and Baldwin School.
