About Upper School

Shipley’s Upper School provides a demanding, varied, and supportive program for over 300 students in the ninth through twelfth grades. We offer a wide array of honors, standard, and advanced placement courses and students are encouraged to challenge themselves at the levels most appropriate to their skills, past performance, and interests. Our commitment to student-based scheduling allows students, along with their families and advisors, to create increasingly more individualized programs over the course of four years. Each year students are required to take five major courses of study as well as various minors.

We are committed to the development of each student’s autonomy and judgment. Our teachers, coaches, and advisors create the balance of challenge, support, and encouragement that fosters the independence and the intellectual, artistic, athletic, and moral development of our students. From the first conference about course selection for ninth grade to the final meeting of senior seminars in the college counseling process, we expect students to think for themselves and to understand the consequences of their actions. We believe that common sense is often the ideal antidote for uncertainty, and that truthfulness must be present in all of the interactions among school, family, and student.

As a coeducational school, we believe that healthy and respectful relationships between boys and girls lead to a fundamental acceptance and appreciation for other human differences such as race, religion, and socio-economic status. Student performance and participation in every aspect of the academic, arts, and athletic programs demonstrate that Shipley’s commitment to coeducation enhances achievement and enriches the educational experience of all of our students.

The Upper School athletic program provides a challenging and competitive experience in team sports at a variety of levels. Our boys and girls teams are league affiliated, and typically provide students with the opportunity to play at the varsity and junior varsity levels. Students can fulfill their athletic requirement through two or more seasons of interscholastic sports or by choosing physical education or an independent program in athletics.

Every Shipley student completes a minimum of forty hours of community service in order to graduate and most of our students devote significantly more time to community service than is required. In accordance with our School Mission, various aspects of the school program, from class trips to the Senior Service Projects, promote our students’ "compassionate participation in the world."
