Chiaroscuro Self-Portraits
These are a few examples of this years Chiaroscuro Self-Portraits executed by the Studio Art II and Studio III art students. Chiaroscuro is a technique using white for highlight and black for shading on a medium toned paper. The 11th grade students were to draw their portraits realistically in white and black charcoal pencil on colored charcoal papers while the 12th grade was to make a strange face and illustrate it in chalk and stick charcoal on salt and ink washed watercolor paper. Both techniques are challenging yet produce entirely different effects. -- Chris Wagner, Head of Art Department
