Notes from the Archives: How did WWI affect life at Shipley? Archivist Tim Blankenhorn give us a glimpse of life at Shipley during those "troublous times." Read the full story. The National Merit Scholarship Program recognized seven students as Finalists. Find out who. Shipley's Upper School environmental club was named a semi-finalist in a national environmental challenge. Get the details. Three Upper School students were recognized by national and state organizations: Austin Anderson received a nomination from Congressman Sestak to attend a National Service Academy; Glynnis Stevenson was selected to attend a National Student Leadership Conference; and Jonathan Thaler was named as a candidate in the Presidential Scholars Program. Sports Highlights
February was an exciting month for Shipley’s winter sports teams. Girls’ basketball won the FSL championship and made it to the Independent Schools State finals. Boys’ squash won the MASA sportsmanship award for the second year in a row. Girls’ volleyball finished second in the Independent Schools League, and boys’ basketball competed in the FSL semi-finals. Shipley swimmers posted career-best times at the FSL swimming finals and three students went on to compete at the Eastern Championships. Get full details from Sports Highlights. The spring sports season kicks off this week. Many teams will travel to Florida for warm-weather spring training. Read the 2008 Spring Sports Preview.
Health Forms Now Available—Plan Ahead Make an appointment with your child’s doctor to get health forms completed on time for the next school year. Forms are now available for the ’08-’09 school year on the School’s website. Important note: The annual physical exam forms need to be completed based on a 2008 exam. Upcoming Events All-School Book Drive Through Friday, March 7 Don't know what to do with those boxes of books in the basement? Donate them to a good cause. The LS and MS are collecting children’s books for Reach Out and Read and the Global Literacy Project. The US is collecting adult books for Books Through Bars. Collections bins are located in each division.
Inter-School Art Show Through March 17 The Inter-School Art Show is here! Fabulous artwork from Agnes Irwin, Haverford, Baldwin, Episcopal, Friends' Central, and Shipley Upper School students is on display in the Speer Gallery, the US Dining Room, and the lobby of Riely Theatre. If you are on campus, please stop by to view the work of these talented students.
Upper School Musical Friday & Saturday, March 7 & 8, 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 9, 2:00 p.m. Riely Theatre Known as one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular comic operas, The Pirates of Penzance details the unconventional (and often times hilarious) exploits of a band of poetry-loving pirates. Audience members are encouraged to come dressed as pirates for Sunday’s matinee performance. Get more details.
All-School Pennies for Peace Drive on Human Rights Day Thursday, March 13 Students should bring in pennies to benefit Pennies for Peace, a program of the Central Asia Institute that supports community-based education in remote mountain regions of Central Asia.

LS Book Fair: Shipley’s Road Trip to Reading Monday, March 17, 8:00 a.m. – 6:15 p.m. Join your child for family time from 3:00 to 6:15 p.m. Snacks will be served. Travel-themed bingo starts at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, 7:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Enjoy breakfast at the book fair with your child. A schedule of when your child’s class is visiting the book fair will be sent home soon. Feel free to visit the fair with your child and his/her class. Presentation by Parenting Author Jim Taylor Wednesday, March 12 7:00 p.m., Gladwyne Montessori School 920 Youngsford Road, Gladwyne, PA 19035 The author of Positive Pushing and Your Children Are Under Attack, Dr. Jim Taylor will explain to parents how to push, when to push, and most importantly, when to back off. Come get practical advice and tools from Dr. Taylor on how to provide children with a positive, caring and motivating impetus to seek out success and happiness.
