Social Studies Rocks! First Graders Tie-Dye to Learn about Water
Most people associate tie-dyed T-shirts with '60s concerts and psychedelic rock bands. Mrs. Campbell’s first grade class associates them with water. A T-shirt tie-dying activity concluded a social studies unit about water, including lessons about the water cycle, the uses of water, the importance of protecting natural resources, where water is found, and ocean life—in addition to how to tie-dye.

Mrs. Campbell said of the unit, “As always with social studies thematic units, the theme is a vehicle by which the children’s awareness of themselves and the world around them is expanded. We emphasize compassionate participation, and how they can help to take care of themselves, each other, and their world.” Students dove into the integrated lesson with great enthusiasm, unveiling the mysterious outcome of their efforts with great pride and big smiles…Social studies class was never so groovy!
