Shipley Upper School Students Recognized
Senior Austin Anderson Receives Nomination to Attend US Service Academy
Senior Austin Anderson one of 31 students to receive a nomination for the Service Academies by Congressman Joe Sestak. Austin was honored during a reception on February 1 at Valley Forge Military Academy & College.

Each year, thousands of students compete to earn a coveted spot in one of the United States Service Academies. Unlike other colleges and universities, where the process ends with acceptance from the institution, applicants to the United States Air Force Academy, the United States Naval Academy, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and the United States Military Academy process requires the additional step of receiving a nomination.

Junior Glynnis Stevenson Selected to Attend National Student Leadership Conference
Junior Glynnis Stevenson has been selected to participate in the National Student Leadership Conference on Medicine & Health Care this summer at UC Berkeley. Glynnis is interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine.

The National Student Leadership Conference features career-focused, hands-on activities that simulate a career in students’ areas of interest. Specialized workshops and classes help students develop the skills and traits that define a leader.

The NSLC seeks outstanding high school students from around the world who demonstrate academic excellence and leadership ability. Students must be attending 9th, 10th, 11th or 12th grade and maintaining at least a "B" average at the time of enrollment. The program is entering its 20th year with a mission to “Identify and recognize outstanding young leaders from around the world, and provide them with a unique learning environment that encourages not only academic achievement, but also diversity, cooperation, and social responsibility.

Senior Jonathan Thaler Named Candidate in Presidential Scholars Program
Senior Jonathan Thaler was named one of 2,600 candidates in the 2008 Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 2.8 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools this year.

Scholars are selected for their exceptional performance on either the College Board SAT or the ACT Assessment. Further consideration is based on students’ essays, self-assessments, extra-curricular activities, school recommendations, and school transcripts. In April, 500 semi-finalists will be selected by a distinguished panel of educators, and the Commission on Presidential Scholars will make the final selection of Scholars in May.
