The 2007-2008 school year took off at warp speed. Meetings, classes, community events, sports, and rehearsals have kept everyone busy. Here are some of the things that we’ve been up to:

Upper School Student Government Retreat
Shipley’s Upper School student government leaders got a head start on a busy year by attending a retreat on September 5. Serious planning sessions by each committee were interspersed with some fun team-building activities. All-School President Nate Bronstein has promised Shipley “the best year ever.” If student leaders have their way, it’s sure to be a promise well kept. Stay tuned to the News section of the website throughout the year for updates on what student leaders are planning and doing.

Building Muscles, Building Community
Most students and parents know Shipley’s Fitness Trainer, Cindy Auslander, for her ability to whip students into shape. Last year, she decided to whip up some community spirit among Shipley’s adults by organizing a team for the Philadelphia Dragon Boat Festival. With 1 alumnus, 10 current parents, 2 past parents, and 8 faculty members aboard, the Shipley Gators will make their Dragon Boat Race premier on Saturday, October 6. Head on down to the Schuylkill River and cheer on your fellow Shipley community members. Festivities take place all day long. Email Cindy Auslander for more information.

All-School Assembly The Shipley community held its first All-School Assembly of the year on September 19. With bustling, bright energy, the entire school gathered in Yarnall Gymnasium to celebrate the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. Performances by some of the School’s musical groups, a welcome from All-School President Nate Bronstein, and one of Shipley’s favorite traditions—the Mighty Oaks and Little Acorns ceremony—made for an especially joyful occasion.

Family Welcome Back Barbecue Over 175 Shipley families attended the ninth annual Welcome Back Barbecue. Great weather, good food, and even better company made for the most successful barbecue ever. A kid-friendly DJ kept the place hopping—and limboing—throughout the afternoon. Thanks to everyone who helped to make it such a special event. We can’t wait until next year!
Fifth Grade Sets Walking Record Congratulations to Shipley’s fifth grade for walking a combined total of 2,122 miles since the beginning of their fourth grade year! This is the first time a fifth-grade class has reached the 2,000 mile mark in the Lower School walking program! Lower School Physical Education Coordinator, Fred Speers, carefully tracks the miles walked by fourth and fifth grade students on a map outside of the Lower School gym. The record-setting mileage lands the fifth grade somewhere around Salt Lake City, Utah. It’s still early in the school year, but the fifth grade is well on its way to setting more records.
Students in fourth and fifth grades are strongly encouraged to log miles outside of school by walking, running, swimming, or bicycling. If you are a fourth- or fifth-grade parent, please record the number of miles your child has completed outside of school, along with the date, the method for completing the mileage, and your signature. Students can turn in their mileage tracking sheets to Fred Speers.
