Quick Notes II: Fall 2005
Junior Solos in Upcoming Concert
Eric Simpson, a junior, will be soloing with the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra on December 4th at 3:00 pm, at the Upper Darby High School Performing Arts Center, Landsdowne Ave. & School Lane, in Upper Darby. He will be performing the first movement of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto.

This past Nov. 5th, he competed in the Newark Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and was chosen a winner. He will be the featured soloist for the Newark Symphony Orchestra in May performing the entire Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.

Eric began playing the violin when he was four years old, and since the age of twelve has entered many young musician competitions, resulting in numerous solo appearances with area orchestras, including the Ocean City Pops, the Delaware County Symphony, the Bucks County Symphony, the Pottstown Symphony, the Ambler Symphony, the Warminster Symphony, and Musica 2000.

At Shipley, Eric is a devoted Latin and ancient Greek student and an enthusiastic member of the Shakespeare Club.

Walking Across the State and Country, Virtually
Fourth and fifth graders continue to take their exercise seriously. They take it even more seriously when competing against their peers in another grade. Each morning students arrive early to school, drop their bookbags in the lobby, and head straight to the gym to start their laps. To date, the fourth grade has completed 296 miles/476 kilometers in the Walk Across Pennsylvania program, while the fifth grade has achieved a record of 318 miles/ 512 kilometers in the Walk Across the USA program.

Since this is the second year the fifth grade has participated in the program, they have achieved a two-year total of 1,797 miles/2,891 Kilometers.

Mmm…, Cheese
Anyone who has recently seen the Wallace and Gromit movie, Revenge of the Were- Rabbit, can appreciate the pleasure of eating a piece of cheese. The sixth grade French activity took that endeavor to the next step when they had one of the most popular events of the year, a cheese tasting. After researching different varieties of specialty cheeses from France, the students chose the ones they wanted to try. Their teacher Virginie Ramon-Bobst, shopped for them and brought them in for the tasting. The budding gourmets were not shy, as they pondered over trying the St. Andre versus a raclette, brie or gruyere. Of course, they all enjoyed a bit of baguette as an accompaniment.
