Chairs Get a Makeover: Students Learn a Lesson in Giving
The Family School in Philadelphia is one of the non-profit organizations that the Shipley Lower School has loved to be involved with. Since the beginning of the school year, when lower school teachers painted a mural at Family School, the teachers have continued to keep the school in their thoughts. The most recent project paired fifth graders with some very worn chairs in need of refurbishment. With peeling and scratched paint, the chairs were definitely in need of a makeover. So students set about sanding the rough spots, painting, and then polyurethaning the finished surfaces. The results are evident in the smiles of the students who labored long and hard.

Family School is a division of Family Support Services (FSS), a non-profit social service agency for Philadelphia and Delaware counties. Family School provides parenting education classes, social work support, and baby, toddler, and pre-school classes.

Shipley takes pride in providing service opportunities for students that are challenging, educational, and rewarding. Students have cleared trails, done chores to raise money for gifts, made meals for shelters, helped build houses, and spent time with children in daycare facilities.
