Martin Luther King Junior said, “Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'” At Shipley, the answer is “A lot!”
On Monday, January 15, Shipley demonstrated its commitment to service learning and celebrated the life of Martin Luther King Jr. during the School’s annual MLK Day of Service. Over 300 students and parents participated in the day’s events.
At the Lower School, students were busy knitting scarves for Philadelphia Cares, making sandwiches for Life Center, coloring books for People’s Emergency Center and St. Christopher’s Hospital, donating school uniform clothes for Family Support Services, and preparing hygiene, first aid, baby, and school kits for Delaware County Domestic Abuse Center and Family Support Services.
Upper and Middle School students spent the day off campus sorting food at Philabundance and SHARE, packing and delivering meals at MANNA, sorting books at the Philadelphia Reads book bank, spending time with elderly citizens at Rosemont Manor, Saunders House, and Bryn, Mawr Brighton, and beading for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“This is just a small way to honor Martin Luther King’s dream,” Sandi Richards, Coordinator of Community Life, said of Shipley’s MLK Day of Service. For ninth grader Nikki Sullivan, honoring King’s dream is a part of daily life at Shipley. “We care about people who aren’t as privileged as us,” she affirmed of the Shipley Community. Seventh grader Molly Samson agreed, “At Shipley we’re really blessed and we want to help others.”
