Knights, Damsels, Queens, and Maids were all in attendance, preparing a celebration. They wore armor, long flowing gowns, pointed hats, and carried shields, that they had designed. They spoke of dragons breathing fire, taking five hours to put on their armor, falling off horses, fighting with a sword, and maids’ dresses not having ruffles like those of the ladies. They drew pictures of what times were like during the days of the knights.
During their presentations each group read a sentence the students had written about something they had learned. For most Kindergarteners, reading and writing are new skills. To hear a student say, “Knights used weapons to protect themselves” sounds simple, but to navigate in the world of an early writer, the sentence actually reads, “knights used wedpons to protet thrslvs.” Another example read, “I no that sumh dranging breth fiyr” or “I know that some dragons breathe fire.” Pretty impressive!
