Shipley Knits One Purls Two for Those in Need
|
The second annual Charity Knit-In took place this past Thursday, November 17th, with members of the Shipley community—parents, students, teachers, grandparents, and friends—all committed to spending two hours for a good cause. With needles in hand they cast on stitches as they began scarves and gaiters, “Shipley Gator Gaiters” for the Dulaan Project.
Dulaan is the Mongolian word for warm, and the Dulaan Project is an organization that provides hats, mittens, socks, neck gaiters, scarves, and sweaters to families, from babies on up to adults, to use as they brave sub-zero temperatures-(down to 40oF, at night). The supplies were donated by Shipley alumna, Sandy Bogle, ’86 and Ewe and I, a knitting store in Bryn Mawr.
Novice or expert knitter, it didn’t really matter. People were there to help each other, to make someone’s life more comfortable and a little warmer. What could be a more rewarding feeling? As Maggie Granados, Head of Lower School and organizer of the Charity Knit-In, describes how the various projects will make a difference, she expresses the feeling all the volunteers had: “Think of it not just as being physically warm, but also the warm heart of human love, and the warm feeling that grows from knowing that you have touched a life, even on the other side of the world.”
