Shipley Strings Are Making Beautiful Music
Master Class for Shipley String Players
David Kim, Concertmaster for the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted a master class with string students in grades eight through twelve. Each student played a solo piece which Kim listened to and then critiqued. His style was non-threatening and he used humorous analogies to help explain his points. For example, “Do you understand the difference between espresso or Turkish coffee and diner coffee? One is rich while the other is watered down. You want to play with a rich sound, not watered down.”
Student performers were Abby Emerson, 8th grade (with violin accompaniment by Alexandra Panichello); Nate Kuntz, 9th grade (cello); Charlotte Nicholas, 9th grade; Eric Simpson, 11th grade; Hannah Nicholas, 12th grade (viola).

String Students in the News
Charlotte Nicholas, a freshman, won second place, Senior Strings Division, in the Tri-County Competition held Saturday, April 22. She was the youngest to compete in this age division. She will be performing the first movement of the Barber violin concerto at the winners' concert on May 21 at Montgomery County Community College.

Eric Simpson, a junior, will be performing the Tchaikovsky violin concerto as a soloist with the Newark (Delaware) Symphony Orchestra on May 21, at 7:00 pm at The University of Delaware. This is the same piece that he worked on with David Kim in the master class, and he has been working on it with some of the best violin teachers in the country, as part of his "college visit" process. He will be playing all three movements.
