Girls’ JV Basketball Places 2nd in Annual Tournament
The Shipley girls’ JV basketball team took a 4-3 league record into the annual JV tournament on Saturday, February 9. Landing a 4th place seed in the pool of eight, the Gators managed to upset the number-one seed, Abington Friends, in the first game of the tournament. Sophomore Rachel Shechtman scored a game-high 7 points to lead the Gators in a 20-6 victory.

The Gators’ next game was also a success as they took down Moorestown Friends, 28-11. Shechtman, as well as sophomores Kendall Roberts and Natalie Burman, combined for 26 of the 28 points.

In the next match, a must-win game to reach the finals, the Gators took care of business against Friends Select, 21-7. Roberts and Burman combined for a total of 15 points, most coming in a second-half run to pull away from Friends Select.

The championship game was against tournament host and number-two seed Friends’ Central. The Gators could not muster the offense that they had in the three previous games, dropping a 19-9 defeat. Again, Roberts and Burman led the way for the Gators with all 9 points.

Other Gators who scored were freshman Ali Morrison, sophomore Christin Zurbach, and juniors Gabby Levin and Hannah Baris. Freshman Kaylin Ford provided much needed energy to the hard-working Gators.
