’Tis the season for awards shows. Even though the red carpet hasn’t been rolled out at Shipley, there’s been no lack of recognition for students in the Middle School. Forget about the glitz and glam of Hollywood, from junior authors, to artists inspired by Classical works, and a host of noteworthy athletes—Shipley’s got real talent.
4 Sixth Grade Students Win Awards in Local Junior Author Contest
Four of Shipley’s talented sixth-grade writers were selected as award-winners in the Gladwyne Library League’s 35th Annual Junior Author Contest. Over 700 students from twenty-two area schools submitted entries for a fierce literary competition.
David Kimmel won first place in the Fiction category for his story, "The Sersalan Stone." In the non-fiction category, Julian Lurie placed first for his piece, "A View from Above." Tyler Walsh’s "The Ocean’s Beauty" was awarded second place. And Jamie Piltch received an honorable mention for his story, "The Shot."
The Library League hosted a reception for the award winners on February 23 at Gladwyne Elementary School. All contest entries will be bound into volumes and kept as part of the Gladwyne Public Library’s permanent collection.

Students’ Work Chosen for the Philadelphia Classical Society’s Artistic Projects Competition
The Philadelphia Classical Society held its annual Artistic Projects Competition at The Baldwin School on Saturday, February 24. Over 30 Shipley Middle School Latin students entered projects into nine different categories of artistic and literary entries. The projects were officially judged by category and among grade level with other students’ works from private and public schools in the Philadelphia suburbs region.
