March Quick Notes
Ben Franklin and Friends
Ben Franklin and his young friend, Rebecca Holland, were special visitors in the fourth grade on March 6th. Rebecca gave a spirited account of the Philadelphia of the eighteenth century, with emphasis on smells and sounds, animals and hawking merchants, which delighted the students. She also demonstrated an eighteenth-century hoop game and helped the students try on vests, “Ben Franklin glasses,” and tri-cornered hats. Franklin, himself, was somewhat more sedate, answering questions about his life and his inventions.

Sixers CFO Talks Money with Students in Economics
Andy Speiser, Chief Financial Officer, for the Philadelphia 76ers, spoke to students in their economic’s course. The students had a chance to learn firsthand about the infrastructure of a major corporation and the business aspects of professional sports. Among other topics, the presentation also introduced the concept of vertical integration and horizontal integration to the students. The Sixers are part of the larger Comcast-Spectacor company which also owns a number of other professional sports teams, an example of horizontal integration in the professional sports space. At the same time, the Company has invested in a number of entities that are part of the supply chain, such as the stadium, food services and a new venture into ticket sales (vertical integration). There is more risk to entering into these additional ventures, but the upside revenue potential is also significant.

100 days
Lower School students acknowledged the 100th day of school with posters using 100 found objects. One class laid a line of drinking straws from one end of the Lower School main lobby to the other. After measuring the length of one straw, they calculated the total distance.

State of the Class Address
5th graders in Ms. Eitlejorg’s class have been studying the use of figurative language, and famous speechmakers like Abe Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. With a clear sense of how language can be used to make a regular speech more interesting and dynamic, the students wrote speeches in the style of the State of the Union Address. Each child presented a speech to classmates and some specially invited guests, including Head of Lower School, Maggie Granados, and Head of School, Steve Piltch.

Lower School Book Fair
The Book Fair was hugely successful, including Ben and Gene Barretta, author of Ben and Now, as well as a Doughnuts with Dad event.
Both were very well attended.
