When Daniel Sullivan was diagnosed and treated for cancer two years ago his fourth grade classmates wanted to do something to acknowledge his situation. So the whole class came together as a team and participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Daniel’s sister, Kelly, a Shipley 8th grader, organized a team which participated in this year’s Relay for Life in honor of her brother. The Shipley team, The Pink Panthers, was comprised of over twelve middle school students, Daniel and Kelly’s parents, and little sister Caroline. They walked in pairs continuously for a twenty-four-hour period starting on Friday, May 20 at four p.m. and ending on Saturday, May 21 at four p.m.
It happened that the weather was particularly cold and windy; however the group was not deterred. In shifts they set out, getting nourishment from the table of food they had set up, and inspiration from a loud speaker playing the best of current rock. Demonstrations of karate, moonbounces, skeeball and other games, entertained the teams between laps. Caroline DiNome, a Shipley first grader and Daniel’s sister, was the youngest member of the team and possibly one of the most ambitious. By ten o’clock Saturday morning she had already logged nine miles, as proven by the little colored plastic feet she collected for each mile. The feet dangled from a string hung around her neck. Perhaps what is most notable about the Pink Panthers’ achievements was the money they raised for the American Cancer Society. With donations from friends, neighbors, family, and school mates, the team raised over $5,000.
