Traditionally, before the holidays, Shipley students in PreK through 12 bring in cans and non-perishables for donation. This year’s food drive happened a little differently this year, with students being asked to bring in packages of macaroni & cheese for Philabundance. The numbers are quite impressive; totaling 2,161 boxes of mac & cheese, that’s nearly three boxes per student in a school of 850 students.
Since 1984, Philabundance, whose goal is to “Drive Hunger from Our Community,” has provided food for over 60 million meals by collecting donated surplus food and distributing it to local organizations serving people in need. This food drive is just one of many service events students participate in. Already this year, over $17,000 has been raised for Habitat for Humanity and The American Red Cross. In Lower School, a raffle to dedicate the new Lower School turf field was conducted. The money raised will be given to the Sacred Heart School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a school that has taken on close to 80 additional students since Hurricane Katrina. The raffle, sponsored by the Lower School Student Council, raised $1,339.
