Shipley Students Make Meals for Families
Each month, 4th graders gather together to prepare a luncheon meal for Family School. Their teachers instruct them on chopping vegetables, sautéing bread cubes for croutons, slicing and dicing fruit for fruit salad, frosting cupcakes, combining ingredients for a chicken casserole, and assembling peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

The students are making a hearty meal for families who are at Family School during the day. Family School, a division of Family Support Services (FSS), is a non-profit social service agency for Philadelphia and Delaware counties. It provides parenting education classes, social work support, and baby, toddler, and pre-school classes. Parents come to Family School with compelling stories of abuse and neglect, but with the services provided by FSS they are making an effort to learn how to be better parents.
