| Letters from the Head of School |
Dear Shipley Families: Just before the 2002-03 school year ended, one of our Lower School students was injured in an incident involving a dog while on School property. This happened even though the dog was on a leash and reputed to be child-friendly. Although Shipley has long had a policy to prevent animals from coming into any unauthorized contact with students, this incident has caused us to reiterate that policy and to strengthen it to avoid any possibility of injury to any of our students, employees, parents and visitors.
As result, the following policy is now in effect:
Due to concerns about the health, safety, and welfare of people in the School community, no animals are allowed at The Shipley School, on Shipley property or at School-related events without the express written permission of the Head of School. This means that animals may not be brought onto School property for any reason (even if the animal is on a leash) including drop-off, pick-up, parties, athletic events and activities, and may not be brought to School-related events on or off campus.
Although this policy may seem to be stringent and could cause inconveniences to all of us with pets, I'm sure you recognize the necessity of reminding everyone of the policy and insisting on compliance. I know you will do everything possible to abide by it so that we can eliminate the chance of any future injuries. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions about this policy.
I look forward to seeing you soon. Warmest regards, Steven S. Piltch Head of School
