March 23, 2005
Dear Shipley Families: Over the years we have striven to create a community in which we appreciate, understand, and respect the similarities and differences of our students, parents, and educators. In order to fulfill our mission and develop a compassionate participation in the world in all members of this community, we have supported a Diversity Team, Service Learning Team, and other groups, and, in the past, a Diversity Coordinator. In an attempt to better bridge these groups, foster the fulfillment of our mission, and create the best community possible (as described in my Head’s Letter of this month), it is a privilege to announce that Sandi Richards will become our first Coordinator of Community Life. A bright, talented, sensitive, and committed individual, Sandi brings to the position over fifteen years of experience at Shipley. During that time she has taught in both the Middle and Upper Schools, has served as a Middle School administrator, and has been a member of our Diversity Team. In addition, she is a parent of three of our students, one alumnus Tommy, who will graduate from Penn in June, and two current students, Will, an eleventh grader, and Corey, a third grader. Along the way, Sandi has perpetually championed the welfare of our students with an eye on creating the safest possible environment for all of them. Believing that Sandi is the perfect person for this position, I am ecstatic that she has agreed to cut back her teaching to two sections of Upper School English so that she can coordinate our efforts. In addition to working with our Diversity, Service Learning, and Student Support Teams, Sandi will work with our Division Heads, Athletic Director, other administrators, student groups and faculty to develop the best possible programs to meet the needs of our students and fulfill our mission. She will also serve as our spokesperson on many community-wide concerns. Well-liked, respected, and admired by everyone who knows her, Sandi is accessible and open to a wide range of views and ideas. I know she will do a fabulous job! If you have any questions or concerns, please call, write, or email me. I hope you have a wonderful spring break. Warmest regards,
