In ancient Greece the first “marathon’ was run between the plain of Marathon and Athens to inform the Athenians of the Greek success against the Persians at the battle of Marathon. The approximate distance between Marathon and Athens is about 25 miles, slightly different from the modern length of a marathon race.
Our challenge is modeled after the walking program created by Mr. Speers. Students will be asked to walk the equivalent of 25 miles by the end of the allotted time. For those who already participate in the morning walking program the miles you walk in the gym can count for BOTH walking programs. We will use our OWN special card system similar to the cards used for the gym program. Each card represents one mile of walking. We will be setting up an outdoor course for those students who might want to walk during recess times as well as opening the gym some days during recess times for walking. This should assure that all will have ample opportunity to complete their “marathon”. Some walking miles may also be accumulated at home. These “at home” miles may be walking, biking, rollerblading or even swimming. No more than about half (12 miles) of the total miles may be done out of school, however. If you complete miles at home it will be necessary for a parent to sign your card. If you do not have a card at home you may bring a signed note from your parent with the activity and the number of miles completed.
