Experiencing Life on the Farm: Fourth Grade Visits a Colonial Plantation
It was a glorious autumn day when fourth graders visited the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation in Ridley Creek Park. The Plantation, a 100-acre tract of land with interpretive guides and craftspeople, provides visitors with an accurate picture of life as it was in Delaware Country prior to the American Revolution. The Plantation has been a working farm for over 300 years.

In their tour, the students learned that the animals on the plantation were similar to those on farms in the late 18th century. They saw examples of raised-bed gardening, post and rail fences, outhouses, wells, and the tools used to complete the many chores for which entire families were responsible in making a farm run.

The guides, wearing authentic 18th-century attire, provided the students with an opportunity to experience some actual chores. They sawed wood into logs for the fireplace, carried the wood to the shed, dipped candles, and brought water from the well.
