Tasting Their Way to a Better Understanding: 6th Graders Enjoy the French Culture
Cultural understanding is necessary when studying a foreign language or traveling to a far away place. For Shipley 6th graders who have joined the French Club, it can also be an introduction to new ways of appreciating the food and sport and how one language extends to far corners of the world.

The French Club meets roughly once a month and though students can attend any activity that day the French Club has developed a faithful group of followers. Since the beginning of the school year students have been introduced to a variety of foods, famous French people, cartoon characters “Boule et Bill,” and most recently crêpes. Topped with sugar, Nutella, or jam, the response from all was the same. Mmmm!

For their teacher Virginie Ramon-Bobst, the French Club is a way to introduce the students to the language in the hope that they will consider French when choosing a Romance Language in 7th grade. She also loves sharing her country’s culture and traditions. Her opening activity explored the cheeses of France and resulted in a cheese tasting that included some of the finest examples available. Roquefort, Saint André, Morbier, and Brie all topped the list of cheeses the students wished to try. At Christmas she taught the students carols, “Vive le Vent” or “Jingle Bells” as well as a Caribbean carol from Martinique, “Bons Baisers de Fort-de-France.”

The students are already very excited about the new semester. They will be learning to play “pétanque”, a game played like Bocce, and learning about all the countries in the world where French is spoken. Vive la France!
