Junior Julia Skyban is Recognized for Superior Piano Playing

Julia Skyban, a junior at The Shipley School, has received 1st place awards in numerous recent piano competitions. As a winner in the 16 -18 age group, at West Chester University’s School of Music’s piano competition, she received $1000 for her performance, and competed against piano students from Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. This competition was held in mid-April. She later performed in The West Chester University Annual Piano Competition Winners Recital and Awards Presentation, held on Sunday, April 25th, where 1st through 3rd place winners in the 9-11, 12 & 13, 14 & 15, and 16 -18 age groups performed.
Each first place winner played at the Academy of Music Ballroom in Philadelphia on May 10th in the West Chester University’s Matinee Musical Club of Philadelphia Concert Series-Young Artist Programs. Skyban performed Basso Ostinato by Shedrin, and Dumka by Tchaikovsky.
First place winners were also offered a full tuition scholarship for study at the Brandywine Piano Institute at West Chester University in July, under the direction of internationally acclaimed pianist Anthony di Bonaventura of Boston University.
Originally from the Ukraine, Skyban began studying piano at the age of seven. Since her family’s arrival in the United States, she has studied under Igor Resniaski at the Nelly Berman School of Music and received numerous awards. She will be performing in the Upcoming Tri-County Youth Festival Concert, Sunday, May 23, 2004, at 2:30 PM, at Montgomery County Community College Science Center Auditorium in Blue Bell, PA.
