Rachel Simon, author of Riding the Bus with My Sister, Shares Her Story with the Community
What is a disability? What is a physical disability? What is a mental disability? These are the questions posed by Rachel Simon, author of Riding the Bus with My Sister, when she visited Shipley on February 16. Simon met with all students in Lower, Middle, and Upper schools at different times and gave an evening presentation for adults that was open to the public.

Rachel Simon’s book is about the growth of her relationship with her sister, Beth, who is mentally disabled. At Beth’s invitation, Rachel spent a year doing what Beth loves most to do—ride the bus. The book is being made into a movie of the same name, with Rosie O’Donnell as Beth. The movie will be aired May 1 on CBS.

Lessons for the students: Focus on the person, not on the disability. Think about people who are like you. Think about people who are not like you. Help them on their journey. And never, never, never use the “R” word.
