Fundraiser for Pediatric Cancer
Despite school rivalries on the athletic fields, sometimes rivals come together for a good cause. In mid March, Shipley freshman, Clare Kuensell, and Episcopal freshman, Lexi Van Arkel organized a squash fundraiser at Haverford School’s Squash Pavilion, with proceeds benefiting pediatric cancer research at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. They raised over $22,000 in the three-hour event. When asked how they felt about arranging such a successful fundraiser, they said, “Very proud. When we saw the support of families in this area and the generosity of donors and sponsors, we knew it was an event that we could plan on having in the upcoming years.”

The event, for middle- and high-school-age students was organized by a committee of student volunteers from Episcopal, Shipley, Baldwin, Haverford, Germantown Academy, Chestnut Hill, and Agnes Irwin. With Clare and Lexi, at the helm, they arrranged an program which included a squash clinic with world class pros, a pro exhibition match, and a reception, raffle, and prizes. Both girls commented, “The best part of the fundraiser, besides the actual event itself, was the aftermath of the day. We had people calling us, writing us emails, and just stopping to congratulate us. It made us feel good to see people’s reaction to Squash Pediatric Cancer and it made us feel that we made a change.”

Sponsors included SUBARU of America, RBC Dain Rauscher Inc., Wilmington Trust, Turner White Communications, and many families.
