Study Tour Impacts Life of a Shipley Senior
Miyori Panis, a senior at Shipley, attended the Junior Study Tour 2004 in Okinawa. The tour brought together 17 students from countries around the world and 20 Okinawan students for a cross-cultural exchange program. The program is open to Asians of Okinawan descent but it welcomes those who have had a historical connection with Okinawa. This experience was life changing for Panis, “It was truly a unique experience since we were all motivated to learn more about a culture that has influenced our lives and to gain an understanding of different types of people there as well as across the globe.”

Okinawa, a small island to the south of Japan, north of the Philippines, was a key stopping point for those who traded goods with Japan, China, Korea, and Southeast Asia. It now prides itself on its beautiful culture and traditions. Okinawa remained under US occupation until 1972 when it came under Japanese control. To this day the U.S. maintains a strong military presence there. Panis and her companions visited many historical sites as well as Churami Aquarium (the second largest aquarium in the world) the Okinawan Peace Memorial Museum, Shun-jo Castle, and Peace Memorial Park.

The study tour provided a remarkable opportunity for individuals from different countries and speaking different languates to learn about each other. While there were language barriers (languages included Japanese, Okinawan, English, Portuguese, and Spanish), the participants found ways to communicate. The opportunity to learn about her Okinawan heritage, and the differences and similarities in those who participated in the program, was life-changing for Panis. She gained a thorough understanding of Okinawan history and respect for their commitment to uphold peace and understanding despite a long history of conflict and domination.
