A Whale of a Tale
It’s pretty exciting to be able to walk into the belly of a life-size whale stretching from one end of the gym to the other, especially when you are a Pre-K aged student and only about 3 feet tall.  It’s also exciting to learn about the peaceful, curious, and endangered whale from Susan Dunswell, “The Whale Lady,” who brought her interactive multi-media whale program to the Pre-K classroom. Dunswell shared other important whale facts including how fish and whales differ, how similar humans are to whales, what other animals can be found in the ocean, and how huge whales really are.  They are the largest mammals in the world, measuring over 60 feet.

The students watched a video of whales breaching, surfacing, and making sounds and played with hands-on items including ocean themed slides in viewfinders. They made whale tails with chalk and black paper, surfed on inflatable turtles and dolphins, put ocean puzzles together, made beach scenes with felt, and built Lego ocean worlds. It was a day to remember and almost like a day at the beach.
