Photographs by award-winning photographer Jill Greenberg will be on display in Shipley’s Speer Gallery through October 10. The artist’s popular “Monkey Portraits” series, on loan to Shipley from The West Collection, features larger-than-life portraits of monkeys.
A statement released by the artist says that the series, “asks us to consider our origins. We look into the monkey’s expressions, their faces—their peculiar physiognomy—and somehow see ourselves. It is frightening and disorienting, exhilarating and awesome. Greenberg mischievously shows us another type of mirror-stage, where we confront an ancient and distorted reflection, another startling spectacle, and try to make sense of who or what we are seeing. By intentionally anthropomorphizing monkeys, we cannot help but identify with their gaze and be reminded of people we know, expressions that we have seen before.”
Come experience it for yourself. The Speer Gallery is located on Shipley’s Upper Campus in the Main Building, adjacent to the dining room.
