Jenna Collazzo, Elizabeth Durham, Samuel Lazarus, Jeesoo Lee, Hannah McGrath, and Maximillian Rampulla earned Commended recognition.
Caroline DiNome and Natalia Joseph achieved Semifinalist recognition, and will advance in the scholarship competition. Finalists will be announced in February.
The National Merit Scholarship Program honors students who achieve an outstanding performance on the 2015 PSAT/NMSQT. Roughly 1.6 million students from over 22,000 high schools participate in the program. Finalists will be eligible for a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship.
Middle School science teacher Ace Schwarz was one of 10 educators selected to participate in the 2023 NASA/IPAC Teacher Archive Research Program (NITARP), which partners small groups of educators with a research astronomer for original, year-long, authentic research projects.
Chess team members Srijan Velamuri ’23 and Adithi Srinivasan ’25 earned first and second places, respectively, at the Interscholastic Chess Tournament, hosted by Shipley on December 9, 2022.
The Shipley Sprouts, Shipley's Upper School horticulture club, won two second-place awards at the 2022 Philadelphia Flower Show for their Tablescape exhibit. In addition, students in the Upper School STEAM Department won third and second-place awards for their Garden Gate exhibit.
On Thursday, May 26 the Upper School held its annual Closing Awards Ceremony. During this ceremony, Shipley recognized the outgoing and incoming student leadership officers and presented students with academic, athletic, and leadership awards.
Shipley's Middle School Latin students took the 2022 National Latin Examination with over 100,000 students from around the world. An impressive 26 students earned Latin Award prizes and recognition for excellence. Middle School Latin students also competed in The Philadelphia Classical Society's 83rd Annual Latin Week Competition - Traditional Artistry & Literary Projects on Classical themes. A total of 55 Middle School students won Latin Awards and recognition for excellence.
Shipley Middle School science teacher Ace Schwarz has been selected to participate in its 2022 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Landmarks of American History Workshop, The Space Age on the Space Coast. "I am hoping to bring back what I learn so we can really develop the space exploration aspect of our curriculum," commented Mx. Schwarz.
Shipley’s Middle School Science Olympiad team earned an overall ninth-place finish at the Pennsylvania Science Olympiad State Tournament held at Penn State Altoona on April 30.
Five Shipley Upper School students earned Honorable Mentions for their hard work at the Model UN event in Washington, DC and the Harvard Model Congress event in Boston, MA.
Shipley’s Middle School Science Olympiad teams participated in the 4th Annual Eagle Invitational at Mountain View Middle School in Mechanicsburg, PA on February 12. Combined, the teams finished with a team-record eight medals and Team A earned a 7th place finish out of 36 teams from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware.
Shipley's Field Hockey Team, coached by Avery Safford '11, won the Friends Schools League Championship on Tuesday, November 2 beating Academy of the New Church by a score of 3-2.
Shipley's Boys' Soccer Team, coached by Thom Schauerman, won the Friends Schools League Championship on Saturday, October 30 beating Westtown by a score of 4-1.
Claire Brasfield '24 and Sofia Richards '24 took home first place in the Women's Freshman Novice Double at the Philadelphia Scholastic Rowing Association's City Championship Regatta.

Five members of Shipley's DECA chapter placed in the top three of their respective categories at the 70th Annual State Career Development Conference and qualified for the International Conference in April.
