Professional Development -- Policy

The Shipley School recognizes all teachers as lifelong learners. The School seeks to foster the attitudes and habits inherent in teachers who are self-motivated and exhibit a purposeful and genuine involvement in their learning. True adult learners can identify direct and germane applications for the skills and knowledge they have already acquired or want to improve. To that end the School encourages teachers to continue their studies and enrich their learning. In the framework of self- and formal School evaluations, each teacher is asked to state clearly how and when he or she plans to improve teaching skills, acquire new knowledge and stay abreast of new developments in his/her field of expertise.

Professional goals for self-renewal can be met through participation in a range of growth initiatives supported by the School. Some teachers work on a program of studies for an advanced degree or special certification. Others are interested in acquiring current knowledge in the field and practical classroom skills. Some teachers attend conferences that bring together other professionals in similar fields and participate in workshop sessions that explore issues relevant to both classroom subject and teaching. Some prefer collaborative projects in which colleagues with common interests look for ways to integrate curriculum, develop educational programs, or create interdisciplinary projects. Others can improve their teaching by observing colleagues engaged in similar work inside and outside the School. All teachers should look carefully for opportunities that help them step out of their day-to-day routines and enable them to examine the craft they practice.

Every teacher will inform the Professional Development Committee in writing of all professional development activities undertaken during the academic year and/or summer that improve teaching, help the teacher to meet additional school responsibilities, or support school programs and Shipley's educational mission. A teacher's short- and long-term plan of action for growth will be at once individual and corporate, responding both to individual needs and to the institution's overall educational purposes. Upon the completion of any professional development activity, teachers will share their experiences with colleagues in the appropriate forums determined by the division.

Professional Development pursuits range in cost from free to very expensive, depending on the nature of the program. In an effort to help teachers meet their stated goals, the Shipley School commits itself wholeheartedly to providing financial support whenever possible. The pool of available funds continues to grow.

In the spirit of commitment to on-going professional development, the School seeks to nurture and support its faculty. Fulfilling the "spirit" of professional development must always surpass simple adherence to the "letter" of the law. Shipley supports teachers who are committed to a process of self-renewal that is rigorous and purposeful.
