For faculty members at Shipley, there are many opportunities to experience professional development and enrichment.
Mentoring Program
Teachers new to Shipley are matched with a mentor in their own division. The function of the mentor is to introduce the faculty member to Shipley culture, answer questions specific to the daily operations of the school, and act as a friend. Anyone interested in becoming a mentor should contact the head(s) of the mentor committee. Read more about the Mentoring Program>>>
MCRC
The Multicultural Resource Center, located at Baldwin School, is a consortium of twenty local independent schools. Shipley acts as one of eight Board schools. Approximately four times each year, the committee offers programs directed at diversity issues. The programs are open to faculty and students and the number of participants is usually limited. Notices are sent out to all faculty members. The charge to participate is assumed by Shipley.
Montgomery County Intermediate Unit
The MCIU, located in Norristown, offers workshops in all areas, many free of charge. Each division should have a printed explanation of the workshops offered at various times of the year.
Class Visits
Faculty are encouraged to visit colleagues within the same division, as well as within the same department. In the past, these visits were recorded with the Curriculum Oversight Committee.
Integrated Teaching
Teachers may work together on a specific unit to integrate several disciplines.
PAIS (Pennsylvania Association of Independent Schools formerly know as PAPAS)
PAIS evaluation committees visit independent schools in Pennsylvania to complete the accreditation process. Anyone interested in serving on a PAIS committee should contact the PAIS office at 610-525-0146.
Diversity Committee Discussions
The Diversity Committee at Shipley organizes several discussions throughout the year, open to faculty members.
Shipley Committees
In addition to serving on a department committee, faculty members also serve on the Professional Development Committee, the Diversity Committee, the Safety Committee, the Curriculum Oversight Committee, and the Service Learning Committee. There is also a faculty representative from each division to the Board of Trustees. Depending on the committee, positions are either assigned on a volunteer basis or an appointment basis.
Membership in Professional Organizations
Faculty members are encouraged to become members in professional organizations that pertain to their areas of expertise at school. These associations often provide relevant publications, materials, recent developments in the field, and important connections with others involved in the field. Since annual membership dues vary from organization to organizations, faculty members need to check with their division head to see if the school can cover some or all of the cost of the membership.
