Shipley Crew Competes in New Jersey Scholastic Championships
Traveling to Camden County for the New Jersey Scholastic Championships on Saturday, April 26, the Shipley Crew team had another weekend of great racing. The boys' and girls' teams both raced strong on the Cooper River despite wind and the navigation of a new course for many rowers.

On the boys' side, the boys' varsity competed in the New Jersey Championships on Saturday and the Cooper Cup on Sunday. On Saturday, the Junior Quad (Matt Hyman, Chris Sfedu, Cristian Wedgwood, and Jeff Ford) qualified for the finals and finished 6th overall. The Varsity Double (Alex Lerman and Steve Petro) also finished with a 6th place finish against some very tough competition.

The junior eight (Ian Riley, Travis Rosenbluth, Andrew Ramsey, Derek Timm-Brock, Ryan Archer, Anders Engman, Sam Fisher, Miles Doolittle, and Robbie Walzer) finished first in their qualifying heat against 16 other crews. In the finals, they were just barely edged out of first place by four tenths of a second by Chaminade, a catholic boys’ school from New York.

On Sunday at The Cooper Cup, Shipley raced a boys' Novice Double, which was comprised of Cristian Wedgwood and Matt Hyman. They finished in first place, over five other crews. The Junior Eight also took the gold medal in their category, beating out eleven other schools from all over the eastern seaboard. They were a full eight seconds ahead of the next fastest boat.

On the girls' side, the Novice Girls (cox Maura Watson, Emily Butera, Julia Tyson, Emma Godfrey, Laura Butera, Mackenzie Peterson, Emily Carter, JB Loomis, and Nadia Kale) raced to a 12th place finish out of a field of 21 boats. Posting one of their fastest times yet, this continued momentum will push them through to the City Championships this weekend.

The girls' JV Eight (cox Ali Schwartz, Morgane Hayes, Raffaella Giampaolo, Bonnie Rogers, Natalie Molta, Hannah Scott, Maddie Krick, Nicki Sullivan, and Louisa Raymond) finished in the middle of the pack. The girls' varsity four (cox Kendall Graham, Rachel Johnson, Julia Fisher, Alicia Weigel, and Jenny Colgan) finished in the middle of the pack as well and qualified for the petite final. This race allowed the crews to see first-hand the stiff competition that they will encounter at the Stotesbury Regatta next month.

All teams will race this Sunday at the Philadelphia City Championships on the Schuylkill River.
