Shipley Community Supper and Basketball Games

Saturday 1/27/07

On Saturday, January 27, Shipley Community Life and Athletics held their annual Community Supper and night of basketball. This year’s basketball games were against FSL opponent Germantown Friends School at Shipley’s Upper School.

It was a great evening of Friends Schools League basketball and Shipley camaraderie. Close to 200 people attended the supper, which was organized by Community Life Coordinator, Sandi Richards, and provided by Shipley’s dining service.

Shipley Boys’ Varsity Basketball
Shipley – 32
GFS – 34

In a very close and emotional game, the visiting GFS Tigers scored with no time left on the clock to win by two points. Shipley junior David Balderston led all scorers with 17 points. Shipley senior Charles Dalrymple chipped in 10 points. The Gators are now 6-11 overall and 2-3 in FSL play.

In the JV boys’ basketball game earlier in the night, the Shipley boys’ dropped a hard fought game to GFS, 33-46.

Shipley Girls’ Varsity Basketball
Shipley – 58
GFS – 30

The Shipley Gators (15-2, 5-0 Friends Schools League) employed smothering, second-half defense and a dominating inside presence en route to a commanding 58-30 win over Germantown Friends. After an even 30-24 first half, Shipley clamped down defensively, holding the Tigers to just 6 points in the second half and scoring 28 themselves. Leading the charge was 6’ 2” sophomore center, Alex Lennon, who blitzed through the GFS defense on 9-10 shooting for 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots. The other half of the Gators’ frontcourt, senior forward, Alex King, scored 17 on 7-11 shooting. Senior guard, Rae Goldstein, who recently committed to Muhlenberg to play lacrosse, held Germantown Friends’ leading scorer, sophomore guard, Nina Voith (17.4 ppg), to just nine points.

The Gators hope to stay undefeated in the FSL as they take on Friends’ Central in a key league match-up on Tuesday, January 30, and return for home games against Caravel Academy on Thursday, February 1 and Friends Select on Friday, February 2.

In the JV girls’ basketball contest held earlier in the night, the Shipley girls were not able to hold off the GFS girls’ team as they lost 25-42.
