Boys' Varsity Tennis
2006 Highlights—Overall Record: 9–6, FSL Record: 6–1, FSL 2nd Place
The Shipley tennis team enters the 2007 season hoping to surpass last year’s second place record in the Friends Schools League.
Led by Co-Captains, senior Peter Nettl and junior Jon Thaler, the Gators will work to win the FSL title after graduating last year’s #1 player, Ben Davidson, #4 Tim Ichniowski, and #6 Dave Wadden. The Gators will count on three juniors to lead the way. Thaler (First Team All-Main Line, First Team All-League), Vivek Stalam (First Team All-League), and Steve Warner (Second Team All-League) will compete for three Singles positions.
Juniors Steve Rosenman (2-Year Varsity Letter), Jeff Gordon (1-Year Varsity Letter), Mike Wadden (1-Year Varsity Letter), and T.J. Kiely (1-Year Varsity Letter) will compete for the Doubles positions. Senior Peter Nettl (1-Year Varsity Letter), who played Doubles in 2006, will also compete for a top Doubles position.
The challenge facing the Gators will be to win at least two out of three Singles matches and at least one out of two Doubles matches to earn the three points necessary in the tough Friends League format.
Boys' Varsity Baseball
2006 Highlights—Overall Record: 14–8, FSL Record: 10-2
The 2007 Shipley baseball team hopes that the third time is a charm. After reaching the League Championships and falling short for the last two years in a row, the Gators will look to bring home the School’s first Championship title in baseball in 2007. The team returns six starters from last year’s 14-8 squad, and will enjoy an abundance of senior leadership. The coaching staff hopes that the strength of their 2007 non-League schedule, which includes Germantown Academy, The Haverford School, Penn Charter, The Perkiomen School, Princeton Day School, and the team’s annual Spring Training Trip to Walt Disney World will carry them over the hump.
The Gators will be led by senior Captains, Devin Gage (OF), Eli Branzburg (C), Sam Frey (SS,P), and Harrison Keiser (2B). Devin Gage and Eli Branzburg were selected to the FSL 1st Team All-Conference and will inject potent offense into the team’s efforts. Sam Frey and Harrison Keiser will solidify the defense up the middle. Returning junior starters, David Balderston (1B) and Mike Keiser (3B), will round out the infield and should keep the Gators strong at the corners.
The Gators’ pitching staff will be led by the one-two punch of Sam Frey and Ted Schroeder. Frey is coming off of a knee injury and will be counted on to return to his 2005 form that saw him go 4-0 with an 2.33 ERA, and Schroeder will look to maintain his success on the mound that allowed him to have the team’s lowest ERA at 1.47. Sophomore Corey Rogoff will also be heavily counted on to provide innings and should offer depth to the pitching staff.
Girls’ Varsity Softball
2006 Highlights—Overall Record: 22–2, FSL Record: 12–0, FSL Champions
The 2006 Shipley softball team captured its 9th League Championship in 12 years during its inaugural Friends Schools League season. Led by senior Tri-Captains, Alex King, Kelly Waldron, and Ali Mason, the Gators finished the 2006 season with an overall record of 22-2. Starting the season with a 7-0 record in Orlando, Florida, the Gators continued to rack up wins, recording the most victories in a season in School history and their first FSL Title.
The Gators have all but one starter returning this year, including three excellent leaders and experienced players in the team’s senior Tri-Captains: catcher Alex King (Co-MVP, 1st Team All-Main Line, 1st All-Main Line Life, and 1st Team All-League in 2006), key infielder Kelly Waldron, who was out injured with a broken hand last season, and Ali Mason, a speedy outfielder and bunter.
On the pitching front, Shipley will be returning junior sensation Jess Iacobucci (Co-MVP, 1st Team All-Main Line, 1st All-Main Line Life, and 1st Team All-League in 2006), and sophomores Adrienne Drummond and Julia Schwartz (Honorable Mention All-League). Iacobucci pitched a near perfect game in the League Championships to help the Gators win their first FSL title. Juniors Rebecca Yuska (also a 1st Team All-Main Line and All-League selection in 2006) and Dakota Carroll are returning along with sophomore Ginny Wheeler. Players to watch include freshmen Jen Nichols, Angela DelConte, and Joanie Thompson.
Boys’ Varsity Lacrosse
2006 Highlights—Overall Record: 16 – 4, FSL Record:6-1, FSL Champions, EPSLA Playoffs
The Shipley boys’ varsity lacrosse team set a School record in 2006 with 16 wins, claiming the Championship Title during its first year in the Friends Schools League. A young group of talented players have been training hard all year for their chance to repeat as FSL Champs and head back to the EPSLA playoffs for the third consecutive year. After a trip to Disney World for spring training and games against teams from New York and Ohio, a strong senior class will once again guide the Shipley squad.
The five senior captains, featuring David Bartholomew, Sam Burwell, Tom O’Brien, and Pete Cianelli in the midfield, and Sam Foster on defense, will help the team battle for another FSL title. After losing last season's three starting defensemen (Will Richards—University of Pennsylvania, Mich Fatula—Moravian, David McAllister—Lehigh University) and five-year varsity goalie Jeff Hanhausen (Bucknell) to graduation, Shipley will look to junior Ethan MaGill and sophomores Pat Sullivan and Will Strathmann in 2007 to fill the vacancy of All-State defenseman Richards. Sophomore goalie Jack Tannenbaum is ready for the challenge in the net.
Leading the way offensively for the Gators will be junior attacker John Hird, who had 42 goals last season, as he shares face-off duties with senior Co-Captain Cianelli. Senior David Bartholomew is a four-year midfield starter who put up 17 goals and 17 assists for 34 points last season. The Gators will look to Bartholomew to replace last season’s high scorer, Luke Strathmann (Bates), who finished his career at Shipley as the School’s first 100-goal scorer, with 110 goals.
Sam Burwell (9 goals, 6 assists, 15 points in 2006) will also add to the offensive firepower of the Gators, along with sophomore attacker, Will Lawlor, who had 22 goals in his freshman year. Seniors Mike Sulewski and Jordan Young will also be looked to for added depth on the attack.

Goldstein led the team with 83 goals last season, to give her 212 career goals. She has committed to play lacrosse at Muhlenberg next year. The Shipley girls look forward to great things from other returning players like juniors Jessica Rosenbluth, Leigh Ann Quill, Norah Maxwell, Christina Zipf, Jenny Kley, and sophomore goalie Elizabeth Maltz.
The Gators will look to Senior Sammy Blum to help secure the defense. A strong set of JV players moving up and a strong freshman class will also contribute to the team’s success. The team will travel to Orlando, Florida for spring break training to prepare mentally and physically for the upcoming season. The Shipley girls open their 2007 home schedule on the School’s new turf field on Tuesday, April 3 against Perkiomen.

They have been working extremely hard in the off season in the hopes of winning a National Championship this spring.
The Shipley girl’s crew, led by captains Charlie Thompson, Ali Thaler, Allison Green, and Jenny Sullivan, are hoping to build upon the momentum started this past fall season. With record numbers on the girl’s team, they are looking to be very successful this coming season. The Gators are looking forward to their annual spring break trip to Miami, which will give the crew an edge on the competition. The team’s season opens on Sunday, April 15, and will conclude at the National Championships, which will be held in Camden, NJ this year.
