The Shipley boys’ basketball team (3-0) hosted the 3rd Annual Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament on November 30 and December 1. Teams from The Shipley School, The Haverford School, Harriton High School, and Kennedy Kendrick Catholic played in the event, which raised money for the American Cancer Society.
In the first match-up of the weekend, Harriton High School defeated The Haverford School. The night cap matched Shipley vs. Kennedy Kendrick. Shipley defeated Kennedy Kendrick 51 – 37. The Gators were led by sophomore Monty Leaks, who had 18 points and 5 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was senior co-captain David Balderston, who finished the contest with 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 assists. Balderston also hit a ¾ court shot to beat the buzzer at the end of the third. The Shipley School played Harriton High School in the tournament’s Championship game. Shipley led for the majority of the game until the fourth quarter, when the lead shifted between the two teams a few times. The Gators won the contest 54 – 48 in a hard-fought game. Shipley was led by tournament MVP senior David Balderston, who finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Senior co-captain Charlie Dalrymple was next in line, totaling 13 points and 5 assists. Sophomore John McCann added 9 points, while fellow sophomore Monty Leaks contributed 6 points and 11 rebounds. Along with tournament MVP Balderston, Shipley’s Monty Leaks and Charlie Dalrymple made the All-Tournament Team. Overall the tournament was a success; $750 were raised to donate to the American Cancer Society.
