Brown University’s Athletic Director, Michael Goldberger, Discusses the Role of Athletics in the College Admissions Process
The Shipley School hosted Brown University’s Athletic Director and former Director of Admissions, Michael Goldberger, on October 26 in Riely Theatre. The subject of Mr. Goldberger’s lecture was “The Role of Athletics in the College Admissions Process.”

Goldberger, a 1972 Middlebury College graduate, started his career in education and administration immediately following his days as a three-sport college athlete. Upon graduation from Middlebury, Goldberger went on to coach football at his alma mater. After a short stint at Middlebury, he moved on to Brown University as a football coach, eventually working his way into a position in the Athletic Department and as an Admissions liaison, which led to a full time position in the Admissions Department. After several years, he assumed the position of Director of Admissions at Brown. He recently moved back to the Athletics Department to become the Athletic Director at the nation’s seventh oldest university.

“Be selfish.”
“What’s best for you?”

Mr. Goldberger gave a very informative speech on the college admissions process and then answered questions from the audience. The main theme of the night was “Do your homework on the school.” Mr. Goldberger advised parents and students that college admissions departments want the very best candidates for their school and they will work hard to find those students. Athletic departments at top level colleges spend a great deal of money on their programs and coaching staffs ($12.7 million operating budget at Brown), and they want them to succeed.

Thus, a common ground has to be found between coaches and admissions for the best student-athletes to be admitted for the limited number of spots in each year’s freshman class. Recruiting has become very specific now for all teams at the college level. Fewer students are actively recruited. Desired student-athletes are selected earlier in the recruiting process and they are quite often asked to apply early decision in the summer before their senior year.

“Don’t pick a school based on the coach.”
“Pick the institution.”

Mr. Goldberger stressed the importance of picking a college based on the institution and whether it is the right fit academically. Coaches leave schools; injuries occur; things change. Ultimately, students should be able to have a good academic experience at the school, as well as a healthy social life during their college years.
