The Shipley girls’ varsity soccer team (14-2-1, 9-0 FSL) won the Friends Schools League finals against Westtown on November 3. Outscoring Westtown 1-0, Shipley captured its first girls’ soccer title in the FSL, and its third championship title this fall (Field Hockey and Boys’ Soccer). Despite the bite of crisp autumn air, large numbers of fans from both sides turned out to watch the exciting match. Seven minutes in, junior Jess Rosenbluth scored the only goal of the game on an assist by Dakota Carroll. The Shipley girls kept the pressure high throughout the entire game, with 20 shots on the goal in the first half and 12 in the second. Shipley keeper Rae Goldstein secured a shutout with nine saves, a fine record for her last high school soccer game. Both teams gave it their all, but ultimately Westtown was unable to break through Shipley’s defense. While the entire Shipley team defended well, marking backs freshman Kendall Roberts and junior Jenny Kley each played tremendously, repeatedly thwarting Westtown's attempts to attack down the sidelines. Shipley Junior Leigh Ann Quill, senior Brooke Stokes, and junior Laura DiClemente played impassioned soccer in the midfield, tirelessly tracking from the offensive to defensive third of the field to maintain control of play. Junior stopper Jess Iacobucci played a real presence in the middle of the field during the tense closing minutes, helping to secure Shipley’s victory. Joy Tao ‘07
