Alex Lennon Named Main Line Times Athlete of the Week
GATOR BITE: The Shipley School won its first-ever Friends School League
girls' basketball title this winter, with a 51-42 championship-game win
against Germantown Friends. Junior center Alex Lennon led the way, scoring
23 points for the Gators.

Lennon, a first team All-Friends School League selection, averaged 16 points
per game, and helped Shipley complete a perfect 12-0 league record and a
15-5 overall record that included a second consecutive trip to the finals
Pennsylvania Independent Schools tournament.

"It meant a lot to win the league title," said Lennon. "We went through some
ups and downs this season, but we all stayed together and won the title as a
team."

Shipley girls' basketball head coach Jennie Hall said, "Alex [Lennon] was an
integral part of the team this year. She rebounded well on both ends of the
floor; and on offense, she was a consummate worker, improving on her low
post moves as the season progressed."

Lennon arrived at Shipley after spending her first year of high school at
Archbishop Carroll. Wanting a new environment, Lennon looked at a few
schools before deciding on Shipley.

"I felt Shipley was the best atmosphere for me," said Lennon. "I wanted to
be prepared for college and I believe Shipley is the right fit [for me]."

LATE BLOOMER: Although the Shipley junior played basketball with her
family growing up, Lennon did not start playing organized basketball until
she reached the seventh grade.

"My elementary school [Christ Academy] did not have athletics," said Lennon.
"They were more focused on the academic side. I still enjoyed sports, but I
just did not get the opportunity in elementary school."

In seventh grade at The Christian Academy, Lennon played basketball for
coach Henry Davis, who is the father of Shipley  point guard Alex Davis.
Lennon began playing AAU basketball for the Belles 13-and-under team and
continued to play for two seasons.

The Shipley junior is undecided about which college she would like to attend
but is leaning towards a major of athletic training or sports
administration.
