The Shipley School girl’s varsity soccer team advanced to the finals of the Friends Schools League playoffs, beating George School 5-1.After conceding the opening goal in the 7th minute of the game, The Shipley School girls' varsity soccer team slowly began to dominate the run of play. While the next fifteen minutes were defined by a series of near misses, Shipley finally equalized on a corner kick sent by senior Laura DiClemente. George was able to get a head on the initial service, but Shipley senior Jenny Kley blasted the ball back into the box. After George again failed to clear the ball, senior marking back Dakota Carroll placed a shot just inside the far post. Shipley continued to control the majority of play, attacking consistently down the right flank. This tactic paid great dividends when senior midfielder Leighann Quill beat the George School right back around the corner and served a wonderful ball to the back post. Fellow senior midfielder, Jenny Kley, beat two George defenders to the post and calmly dispatched the cross for Shipley's second tally. Senior striker Jess Rosenbluth continued the scoring early in the second half when she picked up an errant pass in the George penalty box, dodged the last defender, and gracefully placed a ball in the near corner of the net. Moments later, Rosenbluth found DiClemente on a perfectly timed run down the right flank. DiClemente collected the ball in stride and rocketed a shot past the keeper before any of the George defenders had a chance to react. Shipley senior Rebecca Yuska concluded the scoring when she volleyed another superb DiClemente cross into the back of the net. Excellent team defense, led by central defenders Yuska and Carroll and marking backs sophomore Kendall Roberts and freshmen Lauren Touey, helped Shipley's junior goalkeeper, Maureen Gentry, to garner the win in goal. The girls look to defend their Friends’ League title on Thursday, November 1, at 3:00pm at the farm fields in Gladwyne where they will take on Westtown in the championship game.
